Pendekar Sanders' Biography
Pendekar William
Sanders started Cimande training in 1972 one year before he graduated
from college, but he has other interests as well.
He is an accomplished classical
dressage rider, writer and
teacher. He is certified by the classical dressage association as
a high level
instructor, studying with one of the world's
greatest classical teachers, Master Luis
Valenca in Portugal.
Pendekar Sanders rides
and raises some of the finest pure Portuguese Lusitano horses in
the USA while still making numerous trips to Portugal each year to continue
his learning. He has many championships to his credit. Pendekar Sanders
started his appreciation for horses at a young age.
Starting at twelve years of age Pendekar Sanders began the ancient
art of Falconry, the art of training and hunting with birds of prey.
He
was
one of the
first individuals in the USA to be given a Master
Falconer license which he still
holds, and he has taught college courses on the subject.
Currently he
is involved with a federally approved rare breeding project and has
some
of the rarest raptors in his project including the Ornate Hawk Eagle,
Bonelli Eagle, African Hawk Eagle, Gyr Falcon, Red Naped Shaheen,
Black Shaheen, and Goshawk.

Pendekar Sanders started the first Long Bow club in
Washington, PA around 1984 called the "Woodsman of Washington Long Bow
Club" and he
was
featured
in TV spot at the club and hitting some targets thrown in the air. This
was the first club in the USA to allow only longbows to be used and
shots were all taken from natural positions, like lying down, sitting,
behind trees etc. They also participated in an Archery Golf match against
the
best golfers of a local country club. We had a small target on the green
the size of the golf ball hole. We had to reach the green and shoot
our arrow through this hole. This was also covered by local news as
it was the first of its kind in many years in the USA and they won the
match.
Pendekar Sanders shot an 80 pound Howard Hill bamboo and
glass longbow and they used
special arrows for the fairway and the green. He hunted deer, wild
boar, goat and black bear with the long bow, as well as hunted pheasants
on the fly. Pendekar Sanders has had deep passion for traditional
weapons and shown below is a photo of him getting ready to
go on a wild boar hunt in traditional clothing using
the Howard
Hill
longbow.
In the past Pendekar Sanders was also interested in large
game hunting and held the World Record of a grizzly bear taken with
a flintlock (primitive arms) weapon. (See photos below) During this
time he placed third in the National Championships with a flintlock
with
the
scores
of first,
second and third all being exactly the same. The winners were separated
by micrometer measurements of the shots. He also took numerous trophies
with a bow and arrow and pistol. Today he concentrates on hunting only
with his birds and shoots a Mongol style long bow using the traditional
thumb ring, also shooting from a horse in the original style.
Pendekar Sanders has studied natural medicine and
holds various diplomas and is a fellow of the British Homeopathic Association
and has a Veterinarian Homeopathic degree from the British Institute
of Homeopathy.
Pendekar Sanders is now a monthly columnist with one of the largest
martial art magazines in the world, Combat Magazine, printed in England.
Pendekar Sanders also comes from a famous family. His grandfather was
William J. Flynn who was the first Director of the reorganized FBI (J.Edgar
Hoover worked for him) and a former chief of the Secret Service and
Chief of Police in NYC. Pendekar Sanders was made an honorary member
of the US Secret Service to honor his grandfather.
Pendekar Sanders' godfather was the very famous World Champion Boxer
Fritzie Ziivic who instructed him at an early age and Pendekar Sanders
boxed as an amateur for a few months just prior to his starting his
Martial Arts. His record was five and 0. He also tried out for the varsity
wrestling team in high school and made the team on the first try, beating
all of the seasoned wrestlers for the 165 weight spot. Later he injured
his leg in a training session and his coach advised him to sit out a
year so his wrestling career was stopped.
When Pendekar Sanders was wrestling he actually participated in an
even in the Pittsburgh Civic Arena where five individuals volunteered
to wrestle a five hundred pound trained wrestling bear. Pendekar Sanders
(while his horrified parents watched on) was the only one of the five
people to go the distance and not be flattened and pinned by the bear.
The match ended with Pendekar Sanders astride the bear pulling its hair!
Pendekar Sanders admits later to have been dizzy for a time after as
the bear had actually been pressing down on his neck until he stood
up taking the bears weight with him in a final effort to break free
which succeeded. Pendekar Sanders admits this was something only a crazy
teenager would do. He thought he was pretty strong at that point but
that bear was just playing and incredibly powerful.
